You deserve a union that knows your workplace, understands your needs, and has your back when it counts. Whether during the pandemic or as we grapple with the affordability crisis, UFCW Local 401 has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to meeting the needs of our members. Now, as we prepare to head into bargaining, don’t you want to be part of a union willing to work for you?

THE POWER BEHIND YOUR UNION

At UFCW Local 401, we believe that real strength comes from unity, experience, and unwavering support for our members. With deep roots in Alberta and strong connections across North America, we’re proud to be the union that works for you.

Strength in Numbers

We represent over 32,000 members across Alberta and are part of the UFCW family of 1.3 million members across North America. That collective power means better contracts, better protection, and a stronger voice for workers in retail, food processing, healthcare, and other sectors.

Real Support, Right Here in Alberta

We have a local, experienced team ready to support you wherever you are. With 6 full-service offices across the province, we’re never far away. Our team includes:

  • 24 Union Representatives supporting members on the job
  • 2 In-House Lawyers providing direct legal guidance
  • 5 Expert Negotiators securing better deals at the table
  • 3 WCB Advocates helping you navigate injury claims
  • 2 Skilled Organizers building union strength in workplaces
  • 1 Researcher delivering strategic support during bargaining
  • 12 Administrative Staff keeping operations running smoothly

Canada’s Leading Retail Union

UFCW is widely recognized as the retail union in Canada, with unmatched experience advocating for workers in grocery stores, warehouses, retail chains, and more. We’ve been there, we know the challenges, and we know how to win improvements

United for Fairness

We’re proud to be part of the Alberta Federation of Labour Common Front, standing shoulder to shoulder with other unions across the province, both public and private sector, in the fight for fairness, dignity, and better working conditions for all workers.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM UFCW401

1. Stronger Contracts.
UFCW 401 members across Alberta have won the strongest collective agreements in the meat processing industry, with wage increases of up to 26%.

2. Real Benefits.
From dental to prescription coverage, UFCW 401 members are backed by some of the most comprehensive benefit plans in the province.

3. Support That Shows Up.
You’ll have access to real representatives who answer the phone, respond to texts, and fight for you when it matters.

4. Real Results.
In 2024 alone, UFCW 401 secured over $19 million in wage gains and over $495,000 in WCB compensation for members.

THIS IS YOUR MOMENT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We’re entering a critical phase, and your voice matters more than ever.

Shawn Eltom, the owner-operator of your store, has responded to your union’s Notice to Bargain, officially setting the stage for contract negotiations.

However, instead of leading talks himself, Shawn has brought in Michael Vos, a lawyer we believe is connected to Sobeys, to represent management at the bargaining table. While we had hoped to work directly with Shawn, UFCW Local 401 is fully prepared to meet this challenge head-on.

Bargaining is when your union power is most important. It’s your opportunity to demand the wages, benefits, and working conditions you deserve, especially in the face of rising costs and the affordability crisis in Banff.

That’s why no union is better equipped to support you than UFCW Local 401:

  • We are the largest private-sector union in Western Canada
  • We represent nearly 10,000 Sobeys-affiliated workers in Alberta
  • Our team includes experienced negotiators, researchers, economists, and in-house lawyers
  • We bring decades of experience winning real improvements for workers just like you

YOUR VOICE MAKES US STRONGER

To fight for better pay and stronger benefits, we need your input. Your experience on the job matters. Your priorities matter. And your participation will directly shape our demands at the table.

Take a few minutes to complete our bargaining survey, it’s a simple but powerful way to make your voice heard and strengthen our position in negotiations.

Has someone talked to you about CLAC or tried to get you to sign something?

Before you make any decisions, make sure you have all the facts. You have the right to choose a union that truly fights for you, one with a proven track record of standing up for better wages, stronger protections, and real support at work.

We’re here to answer your questions and make sure you’re informed every step of the way.

CLAC FAQ

1. What is CLAC?

CLAC stands for the Christian Labour Association of Canada. While it calls itself a union, it’s not part of the broader labour movement. It’s not affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress or the Alberta Federation of Labour, the groups that unite and support most unions across the country.

2. I was asked to sign something. Should I?

Be very careful. If someone asks you to sign a union card or a petition, you could be unknowingly supporting a move to replace your current union. Never sign anything without fully understanding what it means. If you’re unsure, contact your UFCW 401 representative right away.

3. Is CLAC a real union?

Technically, yes but it operates very differently from traditional unions. CLAC has a long history of working closely with employers and avoiding strikes and strong bargaining tactics. That might sound cooperative, but it often leads to lower wages, fewer protections, and less power for workers.

4. Can I be forced to join CLAC?

No one can force you to join a union you don’t support. If CLAC is trying to organize your workplace, there will be a process through the Alberta Labour Relations Board. Workers will have the right to vote and to make an informed decision.

5. How is UFCW 401 different?

UFCW 401 is part of the broader labour movement and represents over 32,000 workers in Alberta, including nearly 10,000 at Sobeys and related companies. We have real experience, strong bargaining power, and a team of lawyers, negotiators, researchers, and reps who fight for workers every day.

6. What should I do if CLAC is in my workplace?

Stay informed, talk to your UFCW 401 representative, and don’t sign anything you’re unsure about. This is your workplace and your future and it’s important to protect your voice.

From Facebook and Instagram to Reddit and Google Reviews, workers across Canada have shared their frustrations with CLAC’s weak representation and employer-friendly approach. And if you check their Wikipedia page, it’s all there too, including how often CLAC has been criticized for siding with management over workers.

Don’t just take our word for it. The internet is full of warning signs.

Tired of listening to people who seem more loyal to big bosses like Sobeys than folks on the floor? Maple Leaf employees in Edmonton took action. In the video below, they share what happened when they left CLAC and joined UFCW Local 401.
