UFCW Local 401 is currently bargaining a new collective agreement with Grand Villa Casino.
Among the issues discussed at the table, Grand Villa has dismissed proposed protection for workers around two major human rights issues: proper access to washrooms for all employees, and workplace privacy for transgender workers.
Grand Villa has told employees that they are not allowed to use the public bathrooms in the casino. Instead, the more than 100 workers are expected to share one bathroom. Not only does this violate Alberta Occupational Health and Safety section 357 that requires an appropriate number of toilets per employee, this expectation denies workers respect and dignity and does not make logical sense.
In addition, the union has proposed language that requires employer confidentiality for transgender workers regarding their identity and health information if disclosed to the employer. This information should be shared only with the explicit consent of the worker, and in whatever way they choose to do so. This proposal is quickly becoming essential language to protect the privacy and safety of workers in the current hostile political environment.
Given Grand Villa’s refusal to deal with these human rights issues at the bargaining table, we are looking for other avenues of support. We ask that you sign the two petitions below to stand with Grand Villa workers and urge the casino to protect their employees!
