Robert McWilliams Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship Summary

This scholarship is available to union members and their immediate families (children, spouses, or grandchildren).
Applicants: members, or sponsored by a member with at least 6 months’ seniority as of October 31st, 2025.
Deadline for submission: October 31st, 2025
Amount: various winners to receive $500.00 up to $2000.00.
Total Fund Available: S30,000.00

Criteria:
Part 1: An essay of self-introduction.
Part 2: A 500-word essay (double-spaced) with a 10-minute video (video submissions are strongly encouraged) or an essay with at least 1500 words double-spaced on one of the Essay Questions seen below.
Part 3: Proof of registration as a full-time student attending an accredited post-secondary institution in the fall of that year. Results will be announced by December 31st, 2025.

Essay Questions

  1. Based on your interview with two (2) UFCW Local 401 union members, what does it mean to be an engaged member in your union, and why is this so important?
  2. What are three (3) major wins for union members, and how did they accomplish these wins within UFCW Local 401?

Do I fit the following, for the Robert McWilliams Memorial Scholarship?

  • Scholarships are available to union members of Local 401 and their immediate families.
  • Immediate families shall include, and be limited to, spouse, children and grandchildren.
  • The members of the Scholarship Committee and their immediate families shall be excluded from this compensation.
  • Any individuals who have previously received a Robert McWilliams Memorial Scholarship are also exempt.
  • Only applicants who have been a member or are sponsored by another family member with at least 6 months seniority as of October 31st, 2025, will be considered.
  • Recipients must be full-time students accepted at, and attending, an accredited post-secondary institution in the school year commencing the fall of 2025. 
  • An application consists of the two essays described in Part 1 and Part 2 of the Criteria as listed in the Summary above, plus the information required in Part 3.

What to cover in your essay (or video) of self-introduction:

Your essay or video of self-introduction should cover your educational background, employment history, skills, hobbies and interests, organizations and clubs that you have belonged to, future goals (i.e. a 5-year projection), and how this scholarship would assist you.
