In the Fall of 2014, workers at the Trochu Meat Processors plant in Trochu, Alberta, voted to join UFCW Local 1118. Months later, they ratified their first union contract with significant workplace improvements, including major wage increases and benefit improvements. With the merger of Locals 1118 and 401, there are over 100 UFCW Local 401 members at the pork processing facility operated by Sunterra.
Founded by the Acme-based Price family, Sunterra has come to be known as an innovator in the pork industry and an influential player in Alberta food processing circles. In recent years, the Sunterra brand has become even more recognizable through the introduction of Sunterra Markets in the high-end retail grocery business.
As the company has strengthened and expanded its positioning in the global food market, workers at Sunterra in Trochu have worked together to achieve signification contract gains since joining and becoming proud members of UFCW.
