Carson West, from Deer Park Co-op, is one of our most recent scholarship winners. Being a successful applicant for one of the two Robert McWilliams Memorial Scholarships ($2,500 each), Carson will be using this money for his studies at the Red Deer College. He is working on dual diplomas in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Instrumentation Engineering Technology.
After graduation Carson plans to practice as an Instrumentation Technician while working towards his Certified Engineering Technologist designation and eventually become a professional technologist.
When he’s not immersed in his studies, Carson has been an active and interested 401 member who keeps up on the latest Local union events and news through his union website and coming out to cast his ballot in various union elections and contract ratifications. He has also enjoyed taking union educational courses in his time as a member.
In his off time he unwinds by participating in track and field events, short distance running, and health training. He also really enjoys tutoring other students and helping the elderly in his community by shovelling their driveways in the winter.
“I believe that hard work, dedication and kindness towards others are important to becoming a reliable and valuable citizen with integrity and honour”, he says.
We couldn’t agree more, Carson.
Congratulations to you on winning one of your union’s scholarships and all the best in your studies and future plans!
