Mediation Ends Without a Deal: Our Next Step Is a Strike Vote

Sobeys/Safeway fails to make an offer to settle; Local 401 members will proceed with strike votes and return to the bargaining table with a strong strike mandate in September

The latest round of negotiations has concluded, and unfortunately, Sobeys/Safeway failed to make an offer that could lead to a fair settlement.

With mediation now concluded without an agreement, we are moving forward with strike votes.

UFCW Local 401 will return to the bargaining table in Edmonton from September 15–17, with the goal of negotiating a fair agreement and with a very strong strike mandate from our members.

Before we return to the table, we will be conducting strike votes across the membership. This is an important step in showing Sobeys/Safeway that members are united and prepared to stand up for a fair deal.

“We came to the bargaining table ready to negotiate a fair settlement for our members. Unfortunately, Sobeys/Safeway failed to put forward an offer that would allow us to reach an agreement. Our members deserve better, and we are prepared to take the next step together.” – President Thomas Hesse, UFCW Local 401

93% of Safeway Members Said: Hold a Strike Vote

In our most recent Town Hall poll, 93% of members voted in favour of holding a strike vote if mediation did not result in a fair settlement.

That message was clear: members are ready to stand together.

“It is important for members to understand that a strike vote does not mean we are going on strike the next day. A strike vote is about showing Sobeys/Safeway that we are united and willing to take strike action if the company fails to offer a substantial and fair deal in the next round of bargaining. A strong YES vote will give our bargaining team the leverage we need to push Sobeys/Safeway to come back with a fair settlement.” – Secretary Treasurer Richelle Stewart, UFCW Local 401

Now is the time to stay informed, participate in the upcoming strike vote and make your voice heard.

A strong strike mandate will give your bargaining team the leverage needed when we return to the table in September.

Following consultation with Local 401 members, your Union is currently targeting Thanksgiving as a potential timeframe for strike action, should a strike become necessary. This is not a decision to strike tomorrow – it is about being prepared and ensuring Sobeys/Safeway understands that members are willing to take action if the company fails to deliver a fair and substantial agreement.
