Bayshore: A Member Appreciation Follow-Up!

Thank you to those members who came out to say “hello” and share thoughts with your ULRO, Susan Tremblay, on Wednesday, July 2nd.

These member engagement events are the best way for your union to meet you and to hear firsthand how you are doing at work.

We raffled four $50 gift cards to the members who attended.  Congratulations to our winners! For those who were not able to make it out on Wednesday, we look forward to seeing you at our next event in September.

A few things to share

  1. Bayshore acknowledges and agrees that education should be paid for.  Bayshore told us on May 20th that they are working through the plan to adjust this.  We have asked for an update, and will follow up again in a few weeks.
  2. On May 20th, we also asked Bayshore for their policy on mileage paid to community HCA’s.
  3. Your union offers courses for members, including First Aid training! Click here for more information.

Bargaining Update

We have had three bargaining dates this year. The purpose of these negotiations was to develop an Essential Services Agreement for the event of a strike or lockout.  After three days of negotiations, the employer was not able to complete this with us. We requested additional dates in July, but were given dates in October instead.

Your union is not standing idle. We are exploring our next steps to advance the bargaining process.  More information about this is forthcoming, so stay tuned.

Working Short? Let Us Know!

One of the big issues we’re dealing with in the bargaining process is staff being forced to “work short.” Your union wants to hear from you about this issue!

We would like you to let us know if you are working short; we need to know the date that you worked short and what the staffing shortage was (for example, 1 HCA when there should have been 3). Please track this information and send it by e-mail to stremblay@ufcw401.ab.ca.

An Important Note About Payroll

During the member engagement event, union representative Susan Tremblay helped a member determine that they were not being paid correctly — specifically, they were being underpaid — according to the Collective Agreement.  This has been escalated to Human Resources, and Susan expects that this will get resolved shortly.

This kind of direct face-to-face contact and problem-solving is one of the best things to come from events with our members. In this case, we want to follow up with everyone to ensure there are no further pay discrepancies.

Please take a look at your paycheques and the Collective Agreement to confirm that you are being paid correctly.
