Canada Malting Members Accept Offer of Settlement by 85%

Happy Holidays to all, and a special season’s greeting to the employees of Canada Malting who have been working against a strike/lockout deadline of January 1, 2026.

There ended up being a settlement under their Christmas tree this year.

By a margin of 85%, Canada Malting employees have accepted a recently negotiated tentative agreement. While not recommended by your union, the agreement nonetheless had considerable appeal for members at Canada Malting.

With retroactive pay and wage increases as high as $4.09 per hour over the next 16 months (9% over the life of the contract), Canada Malting union members felt the offer reasonably met their needs during a time of economic uncertainty.

Of considerable significance was your union’s ability to defeat the company’s attempt to introduce a benefit co-pay system.

The agreement contains other improvements, including:

  • Increased communications around job postings
  • Enhanced Union Representation in the Plant
  • The introduction of a meal allowance for unplanned overtime
  • Increased premiums for Lead Hands, E House, and Sunday work
  • Improved benefits, including better dental/orthodontic coverage, a higher health spending account, and earlier access to benefit coverage

At every bargaining table, your union is pushing hard to confront the affordability crisis. Workers need and deserve raises, and benefits need to be protected and improved.

Don’t settle for less. The time to stand up and be counted is now.

It is worth noting that a 97% strike vote preceded this deal!

Threatening to withdraw your labour is a critical tool in getting your employer to take your demands seriously.

Canada Malting employees in Calgary produce 200 thousand tonnes of malt every year. That is approximately 17% of the malt used in the Canadian industry each year, which is an important ingredient in your favourite beer.

The work is demanding and technical, and we congratulate these workers and their Union Bargaining Committee for standing strong and demanding respect for the work they do.

May we all stand strong and make our voices heard in 2026!
