As we come to the end of a second day of bargaining, we have a new offer from Cargill that our members can vote on.
Your Bargaining Committee went into this process with the full will of the membership behind them. Their historically strong strike vote, weeks of strike preparation, enthusiastic registration for picketing shifts and overall solidarity sent a clear message to the employer: as negotiations came to a close today, an improved offer would need to be on the table.
Combined with the Union’s willingness to support our members in every possible way during a strike and our preparedness to bring our message to Cargill’s customers, the company has decided to return a new offer for the membership’s consideration.
We will update our members on the full details of this offer next week. We will provide time to consider the offer, we will schedule information sessions, and we will schedule a vote that will determine whether our members accept the offer or choose to go on strike.
“Candidly, the offer will not be everything we wanted,” says Chris O’Halloran, Executive Director of UFCW Local 401. “However, it does contain movement on our key issues, and the Bargaining Committee believes this offer will be preferable to a strike.”
“We’d like to commend the Committee for their hard work in fighting for our members,” continued O’Halloran. “And we’d like to commend our membership for the strong, united stand that has made a new offer from Cargill possible.”
In the meantime, we have issued strike notice for 12:01 am on Monday, July 29th. It is still important that members continue to prepare. Be sure to review the strike preparation booklet that we’ve provided and let us know if you have any questions.
