At left: Cargill Case Ready members show up for a 100% strike vote.
We are asking members to register for picketing shifts at the plant and secondary picketing at retail locations like Wal-Mart, Safeway and Superstore. We will ask members to picket 40 hours a week — or five 8-hour shifts – to receive their full $500.00 picket benefit. There will be 4 shifts you can register for:
There will be 2 picket shifts for secondary picketing.
We will also ask you to list anywhere up to 10 fellow union members with whom you would like to carpool with and travel to retail stores to secondary picket.
What is secondary picketing?
Impacting Cargill’s customers is going to be a key part of our strategy. “Secondary” picketing happens outside the retail outlets that rely on and sell Cargill products. Those customers will see and hear about our cause and may start to ask why the company doesn’t simply give the membership a contract offer that stops the squeeze they are feeling from the affordability crisis.
“Secondary picketing at the retail stores will be the action that will put the most pressure on Cargill to give workers a fair contract offer that addresses their needs,” said Chris O’Halloran, Executive Director for UFCW Local 401. “It is also the most fun part of picketing.”
