After considering it carefully, the membership has rejected the company’s latest offer by a vote of 70%. Your Union will be reaching out to the employer to arrange a meeting and discuss next steps.
“We will not be rushing to take a strike vote,” said Chris O’Halloran, Executive Director for UFCW Local 401. “But the membership has voted to join the National Defence Fund, so they are in a strong position if the company fails to improve their offer.”
Once we hear back from the company on how they would like to move forward, we will be holding a members’ meeting to discuss our options.
“The members at Compass Group have made a completely understandable decision,” said President Thomas Hesse of UFCW Local 401. “Like other Albertans, they’re struggling with the affordability crisis. And what this vote clearly shows is that long-serving members at correctional facilities across the province simply did not see an offer from the company that addressed their needs.”
“It’s important that employers come to the table in these difficult times with a clear understanding of their employees’ needs,” added Secretary-Treasurer Richelle Stewart. “Compass Group still has an opportunity to do this, but if they don’t take that opportunity, we’ll be there to back our members every step of the way in whatever they choose to do next.”
