Local 401 Canada Malting Members Accept Agreement

July 16, 2022

Last week, July 13 – 15, UFCW Local 401 Canada Malting members voted to accept their new Collective Agreement.

“My congratulations go out to the member at Canada Malting. They have ratified their new contract by a vote of 76%.” Stated Chris O’Halloran, UFCW Local 401 Executive Director and lead negotiator for this round of bargaining.

The new contract brings three significant improvements for the workers at Canada Malting. Wages. Benefits. And Pension improvements.

1.    Wages

Canada Malting members will be receiving:

  • increases of 3% retroactive from the expiry of the Collective Agreement, with additional increases of 2.5% each of the next two years;
  • An increase of 13.73% for the members working in the packaging; and
  • And a rise of 6.91% for Operators working in the control rooms.

2.    Benefits

The new contract brings a new $200.00 Health Spending account to your benefits package.

3.    Pension

  • For members of the Defined Benefit Pension Plan (Article 17.10), there will be a $0.25 per hour reduction in employee contributions. The company will make up those contributions to ensure the pension plan stays fully funded.
  • For members of the Group RRSP Plan (Article 17.10), the company is offering an additional 1% contribution match.

Both changes will take effect on August 29, 2022.

“This new deal sees a monetary increase to wages, pension, and benefits. As well as improvements to posting language, maintenance coverage language, employee rights and many union rights,” said O’Halloran. “I’m especially pleased to see the almost 14% increase for the packaging employees!”

The 401 Canada Malting employees won several other changes to the contract that will work to make the workplace run smoother for employees.

These include:

  • An employee Rights clause
  • Uniforms for probationary members
  • Maintenance on call and call-ins
  • Grievance procedure
  • Posting language
