Starlight Casino Negotiations: It’s Time to Talk Money

The Starlight Casino negotiating committee met with the company last week Thursday and Friday. Negotiations moved forward, with the company agreeing to a few more improvements in language. Unfortunately, there are still some major stumbling blocks that the company hasn’t taken reasonable steps to address.

“In today’s world, I believe it is imperative that employers are open and transparent with their employees about how they are using digital tools to collect people’s images and information,” said Chris O’Halloran, Executive Director and Union spokesperson at negotiations.

“It is a bit ridiculous that the employer will not agree to tell employees if they are introducing new surveillance and information-gathering technology,” he added.

This kind of transparency is a part of Canada’s federal laws on workplace privacy, and Alberta’s privacy laws are similar. Protecting our members’ privacy is important in case an employer is tempted to misuse data or surveillance footage.

As we continue to press these points, we will meet the company again on April 23rd and 24th. The company has committed to starting off negotiations on April 23rd by presenting what they believe to be the monetary improvements that members deserve.

The negotiating committee intends to present whatever is negotiated on April 23rd and 24th to the membership for a vote.

We are hopeful that the company will recognize the impact of the affordability crisis on the workers at the Starlight Casino and present an offer with enough money to address members’ needs.
