Superstore Update: Strike Votes Are Coming!
UFCW 401 has applied to the Alberta Labour Relations Board to hold strike votes for Superstore members from September 21 to 24, 2021. In-person votes will be held in every city across the province. Mask requirements and COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place at all voting locations.
What are Superstore members voting for?
The UFCW 401 Superstore Negotiating Committee has been fighting hard to get Loblaw to make a fair offer of settlement to the Superstore membership. Superstore has refused to put a fair monetary offer on the table. The Superstore contract has been expired for three years now, and Loblaw has proposed a five-year contract going forward. They are only offering Superstore members a 3.5 percent wage increase.
“For a company that has enjoyed record profits during the pandemic, it is unacceptable that Loblaw has not tabled more than a 3.5 percent wage increase,” says Richelle Stewart, UFCW Local 401 Secretary-Treasurer. “I cannot see how the company thinks that members would accept such a small increase over an eight-year term.”
It is clear to the Negotiating Committee that the membership will need to show Loblaw we are ready to fight if we want the company to give a fair offer to the Superstore membership.
It is critical that members take the time to get out and vote ‘yes’ for a strike,” continues Stewart. “Without the members working through the COVID-19 pandemic, Superstore would not have made record profits, and it is time for the company to share these historic profits with members.”
The Union has applied for strike votes at the dates, times, and locations listed below. We will send more information and updates once the Government of Alberta approves the strike votes.
