Members with full strike benefits will get a cheque for $500.00 for each week in which you picket a 40-hour schedule. Full strike benefits involves having voted to join the National Defence Fund.
There are no taxes or deductions on strike benefits.
You will see that we use the term strike benefit, not strike pay. The reason for this is that when you pay someone, that pay could be taxable.
We want to make sure that you get every penny you can to support your families while fighting for a fair contract. The goal is to stop the squeeze you are facing from the affordability crisis.
Strike benefits come from three different sources:
• $250.00 comes from the UFCW Strike Fund
• $50.00 comes from the UFCW Canada National Council
• $200.00 comes from the National Defence Fund (NDF) for those union members who have voted to join the NDF.
Important: Please note that six months must elapse from the time of voting to join the NDF in order to be eligible for these benefits.
It is important that you know these funds are healthy and strong enough to support you for as long as the strike lasts. For example, the NDF has over 100 million dollars in savings to support workers who are on strike. The NDF is a strike fund workers vote to join in order to ensure they have the resources needed to coordinate a strong strike campaign should the need arise.
