2024: A Year of Coffee & Conversations!
UFCW Local 401’s Walking Steward program is one of our local’s most innovative contributions to the labour movement. Our incredible Walking Stewards provide guidance, connection and engagement for members in the workplace, and they bring passion and commitment to that work all year round. A signature part of this program are the popular Coffee & Conversation events.
At Coffee & Conversation, our Walking Stewards provide a safe space where members can feel comfortable asking questions and learning more about the benefits of Union membership. They get people involved through innovative games and gift card draws, and generally create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere.
As Walking Steward Karmjit Ryan put it: “It felt incredibly rewarding to connect with members from diverse backgrounds during these events. Many of them shared how relieved they were to ask questions and express their thoughts without worrying about their English proficiency.”
“One memorable moment involved a member who, after learning about the available benefits and education opportunities, expressed how grateful they were to finally understand the resources at their disposal,” added Ryan. “They mentioned that the session gave them time to reflect on their needs and encouraged them to reach out for support in the future.”
The value of these conversations and of the work our Walking Stewards do is immense. We couldn’t be prouder of them and look forward to another fabulous year of Coffee & Conversations in 2025!
