Anti-Bullying movement grows among Safeway union members

There was an old-fashioned union meeting today in Edmonton as employees from that city and area came out to cast their ballots.

What was the vibe? What’s the word on the street? What are people saying?

Edmonton union members at the meeting are clearly voting no. They do not like the Company offer and want to bargain more. They will not be bullied.

Safeway members at our in-person meeting in Edmonton today.

A few participants at the meeting had not made up their minds. However, after examining clear economic data and forecasts for the next four years, the members in attendance were convinced.

They don’t want to live with a bad contract for the next four years.

The members were also talking to each other. What did they say? They committed to standing strong and fighting for a better workplace and a better world.

What’s good for Julie Sue is not good for you

Corporate officials want you to give up on your legal rights and for you to accept a substandard contract. As the population grows in Alberta, they’re looking forward to even more profits, while trying to ensure that Safeway employees bow and give Safeway low labour costs.

That’s the way businesses work.

But where will Julie Sue be when you can’t pay your rent or mortgage? Sobeys bosses won’t be paying your grocery bill, your utility bill, or your auto insurance.

In an inflationary trade war with the US, they will not be willing to renegotiate your contract to give you higher wages. You will be stuck for four years.

If Safeway tries to take away your wage or recover increases they have paid you, call your union for help:

Union advocates and lawyers will be standing by. If the Company rolls your wage back, we’ll be taking legal action. If they ask you to repay money, just say no. They cannot legally collect from you.

But who knows what Sobeys will do. As one fifty-year Safeway worker said, “This isn’t the Company I used to work for.”

Haven’t made up your mind yet?
