Calgary Herald Story About Cargill

Yesterday was a stressful day for our Cargill members.

No one ever wants to hear about layoffs from their employer. Hearing about them at this time of year makes it even more difficult.

But your union acted quickly to ensure two things.

First, we immediately began investigating the impact the announced layoffs would have on our members in Alberta. Thankfully, initial comments from the Company indicated that Alberta Cargill employees would not be affected.

We were glad to be able to get that information out to you only hours after the news of layoffs broke in the media.

Secondly, we worked to get the voice of Cargill workers who were potentially going to be impacted in news reports about the planned layoffs.

“The notion, you know, of a private company that doesn’t report their figures having to lay off workers or reduce staff … it feels like nonsense to me,” said [President Thomas] Hesse. “Where is the government in demanding transparency and demanding that these companies be good corporate citizens and report to Albertans?”

He added that the US$2.48 billion in profit is still profit.

“I don’t believe they’re saying they’re not profitable. I believe they’re saying that they’re making less profit … those are two very different statements,” Hesse said.

Our union will continue to monitor the situation at Cargill and keep our Cargill members updated.
