Early bargaining starts soon. Make your voice heard!

As we approach the start of early bargaining on December 16, 2024, your union is asking you to take part in a critical survey about your experiences working at Safeway.

This is your opportunity to have your voice heard by Safeway and help shape the direction of negotiations.

We know you’ve faced significant challenges on the job, from increasing workloads with fewer resources to dealing with ruder, more abusive, and even violent customers.

In short, your job has gotten harder, and it’s time that Safeway addresses those challenges with higher wages, better benefits, increased workplace health and safety, and other improvements to your working conditions.

That’s why we’re reaching out — your input is vital!

By sharing your experiences, you’ll be helping us better represent the realities of your day-to-day work at the bargaining table and strengthen our position in negotiations.

Why Does Your Feedback Matter?

“Your responses will directly impact our approach to negotiations,” says Secretary Treasurer Richelle Stewart. “We want to make sure Safeway hears your voices loud and clear. Help us send the Company a strong message.”

In early bargaining, we will be fighting hard to make progress on the six key bargaining priorities that you have identified matter most to you:

  • Fair Wages – Wage increases must apply to all Safeway workers and make life more affordable. We will not accept wage rollbacks or takeaways.
  • More Hours for Part-Timers and More Full-Time Jobs – We’re pushing for more full-time opportunities and additional hours for part-time employees, ensuring stability and better livelihoods.
  • Secure and Improved Benefit Plans – Safeway workers deserve enhanced mental health support, dental coverage, and protected benefits. We’ll fight for improved benefits for both part-time and full-time employees, including better retirement options.
  • Safe and Secure Workplaces – Every Safeway worker deserves a safer environment where you feel secure, comfortable, and protected from harm.
  • Fair Discounts for Workers – We believe Safeway employees deserve significant discounts and bonuses — helping you afford to shop at the place where you work.
  • Job Security – We’re committed to protecting Safeway workers from store closures, job cuts, and any disruptive conversions or rebranding that threatens your job security.

The Sobeys Family whose net worth is almost $4.5 billion according to Maclean’s. A family nurturing families? Or a family hurting families?

Fighting Against Anti-Union Behavior

We also stand firm against Sobeys’ ongoing anti-union actions. Their behavior must stop, and we’re fighting to ensure your voices as workers are respected and protected.

“Safeway and the Sobeys Family have been bullying and intimidating you for weeks. That has to stop,” says UFCW Local 401 President Thomas Hesse. “In spite of all the Company’s fear-mongering, Safeway workers have stood strong. When we sit down with the Company they will find out that Local 401 members can’t be pushed around.”

“We won’t stop fighting until they treat you fairly,” concluded Hesse.
