NDF Convention Builds Solidarity

The National Defence Fund Convention held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, from July 16th to 19th, 2023, brought together members of UFCW from various provinces across Canada. The convention aimed to foster solidarity and address common issues faced by UFCW members in the Retail, Hospitality, and Food Processing sectors.

During the convention, delegates engaged in dynamic discussions and workshops centered around the core objectives of the National Defence Fund. The fund is designed to provide financial assistance and support to UFCW members during times of labor disputes, contract negotiations, and other challenges faced within their respective sectors.

The convention’s agenda included keynote speeches by notable figures within the labor movement including Manitoba NDP Leader, Wab Kinew, as well as Dave Meslin who is an artist and activist. We also heard from industry experts, and UFCW representatives. These speakers provided insights into emerging trends, legislative updates, and strategies to address workplace issues that affect UFCW members nationwide.

UFCW Local 401 Union Labour Relations Officer, Tony Evangelista, received recognition on his recent retirement and for his years of service and the dedication he brought to UFCW, the NDF Administration Committee, and most recently UFCW Local 401.

Interactive sessions and panel discussions offered a platform for members to share their experiences, exchange best practices, and propose innovative solutions to the challenges encountered in each sector. The convention facilitated networking opportunities, enabling participants to connect with like-minded individuals and build valuable relationships across different regions and sectors.

This convention provided a unique forum for UFCW Local 401 members to come together, strengthen their collective voice, and work towards advancing the rights and welfare of workers across sectors. Through open dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, participants left the convention equipped with new strategies, inspiration, and a renewed commitment to making a positive impact within their sectors and workplaces.

Next year’s convention will be held on July 14th to the 16th in Ottawa, Ontario. Stay tuned for more details.
