Concerns about the affordability crisis continue to mount as poverty and social justice groups point to new evidence on the degrees to which Canadians, and especially Albertans, are hurting.
Obviously, we don’t need to tell you how difficult the affordability crisis is — you’re feeling it.
A recent report suggests that 73% of Albertans are struggling to afford basic necessities such as food and clothing.

The report goes on to say that 86% of Albertans named the cost of living and inflation as their number one worry, a figure that is higher than in any other part of the country.
It’s no wonder that those concerns are pronounced, given that a new Nanos Research poll shows that one in five Canadians has reported skipping bill payments to afford groceries over the past year.
Working people across the country are fed up and ready to fight back.
This is one of the reasons why workers are beginning to talk about something called a General Strike.

Teachers courageously fought back when the Alberta government refused to address classroom conditions and resisted fair compensation for teachers by going on strike.
The right to strike is protected as a human right under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
That fight continues as Alberta teachers have launched a court challenge to a legal maneuver the government employed, stripping teachers of their rights and forcing them back to work through the use of the Notwithstanding clause.
Now, licensed practical nurses and health care aides belonging to the AUPE have voted 98% in favour of going on strike if necessary.
The AUPE has indicated that wages and workplace safety are among the top concerns for their 16,000 members, who are threatening job action.
Whether you work in a meatpacking plant or one of many hospitals, the issues we face as workers are the same, and the time to fight for fairness is now.

The bottom line is the same across the province: people are hurting and they’re ready to fight back to protect their rights and win the wages they need to make ends meet!

As your union continues to collaborate with the Alberta Federation of Labour and a broader group of unions, known as the Common Front, to ensure that Alberta workers have a voice, we would like to hear your thoughts.
