Recognizing the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia

May 17 marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). Your union is proud to lend our voice to promoting this year’s theme: “No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all.”

The cause of equality for everyone is a cornerstone of our labour movement and lies at the core of our values. Unions in Canada have been at the forefront of the battle for equity and justice in all areas of life. As Xtra Magazine documents in a recent profile, union members have been highly active in the fight against anti-trans discrimination.

We note that the world has recently marked the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: an important document whose declaration “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” has been a force for good in a deeply divided world.

However, for 2SLGBTQIA+ people across the globe, the promise of that declaration has not yet been fulfilled.

We recognize this day as a call for unity and solidarity as we work together to build a better world. Your union is dedicated to doing our part in celebrating a diversity of sexual and gender identities and pushing back against hate within and outside of the workplace.
