REMINDER: Join Our Virtual General Membership Meeting on February 3rd!

As we continue to tackle Alberta’s affordability crisis on behalf of our members, we’re focusing our next general membership meeting on new information, ideas, and insights on this important topic.

It’s a particularly urgent issue in Alberta, as our members know all too well. And you can be part of the conversation with special guest Chris Abbott, UFCW Canada’s Economist, at our next virtual general membership meeting on February 3rd, hosted in Red Deer.

As we prepare to return to bargaining at workplaces like Superstore, it’s no secret that corporate profits have hit record highs, and sales are large and growing. At the same time, food bank visits are up 134% in Alberta since 2019, and over 45% of people in our province report struggling to make ends meet.

But this discussion is not just about all the things we already know to be wrong, and all of the statistics that reflect those problems. It’s about fighting back. It’s about the unique forms of leverage we have that can make a difference for our members and communities.

UFCW Canada’s Economist, Christ Abbott, addresses Local 401 members at a bargaining conference in 2025.

Chris Abbott is the in-house economist for UFCW Canada. His work provides clear insights into wages, working conditions, and company performance across Canadian industries, supporting our union’s bargaining teams and members. Chris holds a doctorate in Political Science from Queen’s University.
