On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 7 PM, President Thomas Hesse and Secretary Treasurer Richelle Stewart will be welcoming a guest speaker from labour law firm Chivers Carpenter.
Kristan McLeod, the firm’s managing partner, practises labour, employment, administrative, and human rights law. She will be discussing legal actions that Local 401 is taking to advance the rights of Safeway employees.
Kristan has a practice full of variety, leading her to appear before provincial and federal courts and labour boards, labour arbitration boards, the Occupational Health and Safety Appeals Board, the Alberta Human Rights Tribunal, professional regulatory boards, and she has appeared at the Supreme Court as counsel for an intervener. She also held the position of Independent Chairperson presiding over inmate disciplinary hearings in federal corrections for five years.
She has presented in conferences and seminars on a variety of labour-related topics, including addiction and mental health issues, duty to accommodate, social media, and the duty of fair representation. Prior to practising law she had a similarly varied professional life as a business analyst, trainer, technical writer, arts marketer, and shutdown crew member. She joined Chivers Carpenter in 2008, and became a partner in 2011.
Please also join us to discuss bargaining with Safeway and a possible strike.
“It’s critical for our Safeway members to make every effort to participate in the call,” said President Hesse. “Labour relations in the coming weeks and months are going to have a significant impact on your employment.”
Secretary Treasurer Stewart agreed strongly, adding: “We would ask that Safeway members pay special attention to this ongoing and evolving situation. Unfortunately, Safeway is being a real bully, and our members are going to have some hard decisions to make.”
You will have the option of watching our town hall live via video stream or listening in on your phone.
Click here to watch a video explaining how the video meetings work.
As explained in the video, all our members will be emailed a unique link to access the meeting. By clicking that link, you can watch the meeting on your phone, tablet, or laptop.
But don’t worry! If you just want to listen on your phone like always, you’ll still be able to do that. Those members who do not use the link we send to watch the video stream of the meeting will get a phone call to join the town hall the way we’ve always done.
If you don’t use the link we send you, all you need to do to participate in our town hall is answer our phone call immediately prior to the start of the meeting. You will be automatically connected to the meeting so you can listen in and ask questions, just like always.
We hope you’ll join us for this urgent town hall meeting on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 7 PM!
In solidarity,
Thomas Hesse, President
