Today, your union commenced yet another legal action against Safeway, << Test First Name >>.
Some of you will have seen Safeway’s so-called bargaining updates entitled “Safeway Talks.” Together with other Safeway conduct, these communications have been intimidating, threatening, and manipulative.
Your union will not stand for this kind of bullying. So, Safeway now faces charges at the Alberta Labour Relations Board.

In an ongoing union poll, a strong sample of Safeway employee responses reveal a reluctant willingness to have early talks with Safeway even though a formal notice to commence negotiations cannot be given under Alberta law until February 2025.
This figure reveals that Safeway employees do not trust Safeway.
Even when threatened, over 40% of Safeway employees are not interested in talking to Safeway. This reality is striking given the current economic climate.
Nonetheless, the majority of Safeway employees have authorized early talks with the Company. We will advise Safeway that we are prepared to meet in the coming weeks unless these poll numbers change in the next few days.

Obviously, the nature and potential outcome of those talks are unknown.
As of today, approximately 95% of Safeway employees indicate that going on strike is a very real option for them. Safeway employees clearly want to bargain from a position of strength.
While Safeway employees are asking their union to enter into talks, they also want to do so cautiously. What is clear is that those employees are prepared to stand strong.
Safeway should pay careful attention to these polling results.
If you haven’t taken the poll, please do so. We will soon be engaging in a final compilation of poll results and communicating with Safeway.
