May 12, 2021 – Quality of life and job protection are key to any worker. Your union bargaining committee has been able to secure some great improvements to your Superstore contract. These improvements will come into effect following ratification, including new additional special leave and job protection provisions.
“Students are a sizeable portion of the Superstore membership and we wanted to make it easier for students to transition from high school to higher education,” says President Thomas Hesse. “Richelle and I were thrilled to see that Superstore members will be able to take a protected education leave and return to their job, and seniority, after attending school away from their hometown.”

Another major victory was getting Superstore members the right to work in more than one store. Combining the education leave with the right to get hours in more than one store will provide student members all across the province the ability to protect their hometown Superstore job, while temporarily working in another Superstore store in Calgary or Edmonton, for example, while they go to school.
Students are not the only ones that will benefit from the improved special leave language in the union contract. Superstore has agreed to do the right thing when a colleague is fleeing domestic violence.

“We know negotiations have taken a long time, but we have secured real victories that will improve the lives of Superstore members,” says President Hesse. “Every member should know that along with your bargaining committee, Richelle and I are all pushing Superstore to move quickly in securing a fair contract for you.”
If you have questions about contract talks, please join President Thomas Hesse, Secretary Treasurer Richelle Stewart, and Executive Director Chris O’Halloran, for a live Question and Answer Zoom meeting about negotiations.
In solidarity,
Your UFCW 401 Negotiating Committee
