Take Back the Night (TBTN) is happening this Friday, September 18 in Calgary! The march meeting point is at 6:45 pm at Connaught Park, located at 1135 14th Avenue SW. The main event is from Treaty 7 Territory!
Curious what this event is all about? From the organizers, “[TBTN] is an annual event dedicated to raising individual and community awareness about gender-based violence. TBTN is held internationally because violence against women, girls, trans women, gender non-binary and 2-spirited people is experienced worldwide. We invite people of all genders to participate in this event. TBTN is a LGBTQQIP2SA inclusive event.
We acknowledge that we live and engage in this activism on Treaty 7 Territory. We give thanks to the Kainai Nation (Blood), Piikani Nation (Northern Peigan), Siksika Nation (Blackfoot), Nakoda Nation (Bearspaw, Chiniki, Wesley/Goodstoney), and Tsuu T’ina Nation (Sarcee). On these lands we are all Treaty peoples.
Rates of gender-based violence and socio-economic injustice in Calgary are among the highest in Canada. Indigenous women and girls are disproportionately represented in these statistics. TBTN Calgary is a grassroots collective that aims to bring communities together to:
• Reclaim our rights to safety,
• Celebrate how we use our individual and collective strengths to heal and effect change,
• Raise awareness of violence and socio-economic and political injustices,
• Mourn those we have lost to gendered violence.
By taking to the streets to march and to public spaces to rally together, we demonstrate that relational violence and systemic injustice is a shared issue requiring a shared response. We call upon all City residents to act with us and TAKE BACK THE NIGHT!”
UFCW Local 401 members and activists are all invited to come and take back the night with us this coming Friday the 18th! We hope to see you there!  Â
