UFCW Canada has endorsed the “End Pension Theft” campaign and the accompanying private member’s bill, Bill C-384, An Act to Amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Companies’ Creditor’s Arrangement Act (pension plans and group insurance programs).
The campaign and private member’s bill were launched by NDP MP Scott Duvall (Hamilton Mountain) in response to the bankruptcy at Sears and the resulting loss of pensions and benefits of both current and retired Sears workers. Under the current laws the pensions and benefits of workers are not protected, while paying off creditors, shareholders and banks are given priority.
MP Scott Duvall is currently doing a campaign tour to help promote and build support for his bill.
In solidarity,
Paul Meinema, National President
