Medicine Hat, AB – January 11, 2020 – As we reach our golden years, our lives inevitably change. These changes can cause a lot of anxiety, but one of the best ways to counter anxiety is by planning ahead as much as possible. At the request of several members in the Medicine Hat area, UFCW Local 401 Union Labour Relations Officer, April Albrecht, recently organized a Pre-Retirement Course there through the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada (CURC).
Held over two days, January 10-12, 2020, a dozen UFCW members from Medicine Hat attended the course. While the majority of participants were members from the city’s two Safeway stores, the course was open to all UFCW members in the area, from retail stores to healthcare members.
CURC pre-retirement planning courses cover topics such as retirement goals, planning around housing and legal issues, relationships, activities (including union activism!), and of course, the all-important issues of health and finance.
“Retirement is something we will hopefully all get to sooner or later,” said UFCW Local 401 Union Labour Relations Officer, April Albrecht. “Planning for retirement in advance allows for the best possible outcomes.”
CURC’s pre-retirement courses can help you get ready for the next stage in your life. If you want to help organize a course in your area, reach out to your UFCW Local 401 Union Labour Relations Officer.
The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 401 is Alberta’s largest private-sector union with 32,000 members working in diverse sectors of the Alberta economy, including food processing, retail, education, healthcare, hospitality, and security services.
Special note: We want to acknowledge the efforts of Sasha Lyman, a UFCW Local 401 member working at one of our Revera healthcare workplaces in Medicine Hat, who took photos of attendees during the course. Thank you, Sasha!
