Washroom and Locker-Room Win: an attack on human rights will NOT be tolerated!

Brooks Members, We Did It!

Critical human rights restored to members of JBS

Today, JBS management issued a notice confirming that all workers may use the processing area locker room washrooms whenever needed, without sign in or interrogation. You can view JBS’s memo here.

JBS Memo Restoring Access to washrooms

“Every woman deserves access to basic necessities at work without fear or delay. This win is about more than just washrooms –it’s about listening to women, respecting their experiences, and ensuring our workplaces reflect their needs with dignity and care. Employers will feel the wrath of 401 if they chose to ignore human rights!”
– Richelle Stewart, UFCW 401 Treasurer

How we won:

  • A member reported the problem to her UFCW 401 Women’s Committee that she was being denied access to her locker before using the washroom.
  • Stewards and women of the UFCW/JBS Women’s Committee quickly gathered statements and flagged the issue to your Union Labour Relations Officers, and then to President Thomas Hesse and Secretary Treasurer, Richelle Stewart.
  • Within hours, UFCW 401 filed a grievance, demanded immediate access, and kept onsite pressure high with daily walkthroughs.

The result? A written notice from the company stating access for all –because of your Union strength!

“We are happy that we didn’t have to go to the extent that we had planned with a large press conference and all that we had prepared. But let’s be clear; when employers threaten human rights, our response must be swift, united, and unapologetic. This victory is a reminder that solidarity is our most powerful tool.”
– Thomas Hesse, UFCW 401 President

What’s next:

  • We’ll monitor every shift for compliance.
  • If you face any push-back, tell a steward or call your Union Labour Relations Officers at 403-501-8486.
  • A grievance remains on file to protect the victory. The grievance will also remain until other related concerns surrounding washrooms and breaks are resolved.

Thank you to the Women’s Committee and every member who spoke up. When we act together, we uphold dignity, health, and respect for everyone on the floor.
