Your union is pushing Sobeys to act on yesterday’s Court of Appeal decision
It wasn’t that long ago that Sobeys improperly rolled your wages back and threatened to send you a bill for money they said you owed them. Oh, how the tables have turned!
The Alberta Court of Appeal now says that Sobeys owes you money! We believe that Sobeys should reflect and do the right thing, honouring the decision of Alberta’s highest court.
Doing so would be ethical and right. It could also provide an opportunity to re-establish some trust with employees and their union.
Today, union lawyers sent a letter to Sobeys’ legal counsel, demanding that monies owed to Safeway employees be paid to them immediately.
We know you want to see action from Sobeys on the Court of Appeal decision as quickly as possible, and we’re pushing to get that for you.

In the meantime, it is entirely reasonable and appropriate to ask your manager when you will receive the money you are owed. Managers are responsible for overseeing your store and for store payroll issues.
Managers can and should be your allies on this matter. If necessary, they should be making inquiries with higher-level Safeway officials to ensure that you get the money you are owed as quickly as possible.
We know the last few months have been challenging. Clawing back wages during the affordability crisis only hurt you further.
We understand you may have become cynical and feel worn down. But the highest court in Alberta has made a ruling about justice and fairness.
From that ruling, we can draw energy to reinvigorate union solidarity and strength. There is still some reason to believe that the truth will be revealed at the end of this story.
