As we all continue to struggle with the affordability crisis, affording groceries remains particularly difficult.
While inflation may be coming down, grocery prices remain sky-high, and that’s hurting everyone.
Your union knows that our retail grocery members have felt those challenges firsthand.
Grocery workers hear complaints about prices from customers who come into their stores. Many of those complaints are rude, and some even cross the line into abusive.
But, at the end of the day, we’re all in the same boat. We’re all struggling with grocery greed. What we need is fair grocery stores and fair checkout — for everyone!
“This holiday season, and as we head into early bargaining with Safeway, we’re bringing the voices of our Safeway and Superstore members to the public in a call for support,” says Secretary Treasurer Richelle Stewart.
“The affordability crisis is affecting all of us,” adds Stewart. “We need to come together to fight for fair checkout and get rid of grocery greed at Safeway and Superstore!”
The radio advertisement, which you can hear by visiting https://faircheckout.ca, will be running on radio stations across the province starting this weekend urging grocery customers to join with workers in demanding fair checkout for everyone and work toward getting rid of grocery greed.
“Let’s be clear,” says President Thomas Hesse. “Grocery giants like Safeway and Superstore are hurting all of us. Grocery store employees can’t even afford to shop where they work. This is wrong and we can fight to change that while addressing the grocery greed that has caused grocery prices to skyrocket.”
President Hesse and Secretary Treasurer Stewart talking to Safeway members about the challenges they face.
“Grocery workers need a raise. They deserve a raise. And these companies can afford to give them a raise,” concludes Hesse. “It’s time for Safeway and Superstore to do the right thing by creating fair checkout for everyone — that includes affordable prices and fair wages.”
