Jay started with Safeway originally in Camrose as a part-time worker in 1967. He left Safeway for a bit and found himself back at Safeway after working with other grocers.
His first Safeway store in the Edmonton area was the former Park Plaza location working in the grocery department. After five years he moved in to file maintenance department where he stayed for the rest of his career.
He has worked at a number of stores over his 35 year career with Safeway finally retiring at the Oliver Square location in Edmonton. Although Jay was not directly active with the union in a formal capacity in his career with Safeway, he was always vocal with raising and addressing concerns when he saw issues in the stores.
Jay has been enjoying his retirement by spending quality time with his wife. Recently they enjoyed a wonderful European holiday. In the future he plans to continue to travel more.
Most likely in the winter months you will find him busy working on his woodworking and has taken up actively refurbishing and repurposing furniture for resale. When the warm weather is upon us you will most likely not find him indoors as he will be enjoying his other passion, driving his Mazda Miata 5 speed red convertible sports car.
Though Jay retired 3 years ago, he’s only just recently realized that he had a gift of a UFCW 401 gold retirement ring for his years of membership. We are very grateful you finally have your ring and we wish you the very best in your continuing retirement. It sure sounds like you’re making the most of it and we could not be more happy for you, Jay.
