“Strengthening Connections” at Sofina Foods in Calgary

Calgary, AB – June 28, 2018. Workers at the Sofina Foods’ Lilydale poultry processing plant in Calgary recently participated in UFCW Local 401’s “Strengthening Connections” contest.

The contest gave the 450-plus hardworking members the chance to win one of four $25 Superstore gift cards.

Entry forms were distributed by union rep Jeff Ible, as well as shop stewards, and other members. To enter the contest, Sofina members were asked to identify two of their shop stewards, two union health and safety committee members, as well as the date of the next union membership meeting.

One hundred people entered the contest and the four lucky winners were Ayir Atem (left), Luisa Logato (top centre), Maribel Batalon (bottom centre with shop Steward Myline Adacai [right of Maribel]), and Millard Jaymalin (right)

“This was a great opportunity for Sofina workers to get to know their union in the workplace and support their fellow union workers at Superstore by way of the $25 shopping opportunity” said Union Labour Relations Officer, Jeff Ible. “These types of events are crucial because when we’re all more active and involved, and when we stick together, we have greater power through collective bargaining and enforcing our union contracts. Members who join together can win the best possible wages, benefits and working conditions.”

UFCW Local 401 is Alberta’s largest private sector union, representing more than 32,000 union members working in diverse sectors of the Alberta economy, including the food and beverage production, retail, warehousing, transportation, and agriculture sectors. Local 401 also represents workers at the Sofina Foods turkey processing plant in Edmonton.
