UFCW Working to Stop Violence Against Women
More than half of UFCW Canada’s members are women; this means there are more than 125,000 women members across Canada. On the national and local levels, UFCW Canada is committed to the health and safety of our women members and is working to end violence against women and girls in Canada. In this, the UFCW Women’s Advisory Committee is just one such initiative aimed at advocating for the rights of unionized women.
In the fight to end violence against women and girls in Canada, the Canadian Network of Women’s Shelters and Transition Houses (CNWSTH) has recently launched a new program, www.sheltersafe.ca to help victims of domestic violence.
UFCW Local 401 is proud to support the Sheltersafe.ca program, which is designed to help women and their children who are experiencing abuse to find safety and escape the violence. The online resource features an easy to use clickable map that allows women to find the nearest shelter to offer them safety and support in their community as well as a 24-hour emergency help phone number.
Sheltersafe.ca understands that women are at the greatest risk of extreme violence when they are preparing to leave an abusive situation or relationship and so it is critical to offer services and help as quickly as possible. Sheltersafe.ca reminds victims of domestic violence that they are not alone, and that there are resources available to help them and their children to find safety when they need it.
